The London born painter, who has been grouped with the Neo-Romantic school, studied at the Brighton School of Art, The Royal Academy Schools, and the Slade School.

Her parents were both of Scottish descent, Church's father, Harold Church, a London Barrister, her mother, the socialite Elsie Neilson Lyle, of the Abraham Lyle dynasty, which became Tate & Lyle. Although very proud to be British, one can see the strong Scottish Colourist influence within her ouvre.

Church always had a natural aptitude for figurative painting from a young age, her skills were enhanced at the Royal Academy and the Slade School in the 1930s. John Piper called Church a 'Real Painter', he said that she had discovered a personal style from an early age. Generous and linear, of the Post Impressionist genre, which she maintained throughout her painting life.

All creative artists are driven by what they hear and see, this was no exception for Katharine Church, her initial contact with leading fellow painters of the early 20th century, was a lasting influence on her outlook on life and work. Church was especially influenced by her close friendship with Ivon Hitchens, and long term family connections with John Piper.

John Duncalfe hopes that this 288 page book of illiustrated works by Katharine Church will be of assistance to collectors, students and art lovers alike. The book has 200 colour illustrations, showing works on paper and canvas with many photographs and ephemera.
