The Paris born Catalan painter Carlos Nadal developed his distinctive style in a career that spanned some seventy years. Conscripted into the Republican Army at the start of the Spanish Civil War, Nadal survived its traumas, including internment. Living variously in Paris, Barcelona and Brussels, Nadal was never short of new inspiration. He also travelled widely, painting in Russia and the Americas as well as many parts of Europe.

All creative artists are driven by what they hear and see, and early contact with some of the leading figures in European modernism helped Nadal to shape his own expressionist pictorial language. In later years he paid homage by producing a series of paintings showing their works within imaginary interiors and museums. These are illustrated here together with a comprehensive selection of landscapes, seascapes, theatre, still life and interiors.

Nadal is said to be one of the last 20th century painters with original Fauve connections. Well-known in Europe, he was virtually unknown in England until the late 1970s, when John Duncalfe took on the role of representing him in the UK.

This book combines 300 colour illustrations of Nadal's work, all sourced from UK collections and public galleries, with new chronological material including photographs and collages, and will prove a lasting and valuable source of reference on the artist, and an aid to collectors and researchers in their quest to identify the works of Carlos Nadal.
