Newton and the Counterfeiter by Thomas Levenson.

After Isaac Newton's academic career, he decided on a very different path, taking on the job of running the Royal Mint. His new role would bring him up against a worthy adversary, William Chaloner, who was a very sophisticated counterfeiter. Not only was Chaloner a master counterfeiter, he was trying to take over the Mint itself. At one point things got so bad, the Mint was forced to recall the nation's coins and reissue them.

With eighteenth century London as a backdrop, Newton pursues his nemesis with cold, hard logic. Author Thomas Levenson brings to life the sights and smells of London, while giving new insight into the man Newton, in his later years. It is a story of obsession and revenge.
