The Unreliable Life Of Harry The Valet by Duncan Hamilton.

A true story from late nineteenth century Paris. While travelling to the Gard du Nord Station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland had her jewels stolen from her railway carriage. The jewels, numbering more than forty pieces, were worth around £2m in today's money. What wasn't known at the time was that the man who committed the robbery had already carried out nine other similar crimes.
He would become the most notorious jewel thief of Victorian London, a man who wore the finest shoes and handmade shoes. He used numerous names at different times to cover his tracks, belonged to several smart clubs in London and lived a fine life in West End hotels. By his own admission his drinking preference was champagne and whisky.  The thief was pursued by London's best detectives, for over five years. He proved to be elusive. A woman he fell for would finally betray him. This story reads like crime fiction, with all the hallmarks of the finest detective stories, but has romance at its heart and a love story which lasted, at least from Harry's view point, for the rest of his life.
